My Scout boat made it through Hurricane Katrina in the city of New Orleans. It was on a trailer at my residence during the hurricane, just a mile from the levee breach. When the levee broke, 6ft of water flooded most of New Orleans, including my home. My Scout, tied down on the trailer with the drain plug in, floated down my street and fortuitously ending up in front of a neighbors house who failed to evacuate. My neighbor cut the boat off the trailer and used the trolling motor to ferry his family and other families to safety. The boat was then used by the National Guard to search for stranded people and other storm victoms. When I returned to New Orleans after having evacuated, I found my Scout on its side on the protection levee by my house, it had dead batteries, and was beat up pretty good. While saddened by the condition of the boat, I find solace in the fact that it ended up in this condition by helping to save lives. Now, I’m underway with repairs to bring my Scout back to pre-Katrina condition. Can’t wait to take my Scout out fishing and feel normal again!
